Soup n Salad n Color

Sweet and Sour Cabbage Soup-I love the flavors of sweet and savory combined. What women doesn’t like chocolate covered pretzels? This soup adds a hint of sour to the mixture. Perfect!

Ingredients-

Olive oil for sautéing

2 leeks sliced thin

2-3 large carrots-chopped

3-4 stalks of celery-chopped

1 small head of purple cabbage-shredded

1/2 cup Apple Cider vinegar

1/4 Agave or Honey (or a comparable amount of brown suger)

28 oz can of chopped tomatoes (San Marzano are the best!)

6 cups vegetable stock

Salt and pepper

DIRECTIONS: In a soup pot on medium heat, cook onions, carrots and celery in olive oil, until they are soft. Add cabbage, and cook until it just starts to wilt, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add in the rest of the ingredients and boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1-11/2 hours. You may ned to add more vinegar or Agave to balance flavors. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Joker Salad-The name of this salad came from my husband Paul. He said the colors reminded him of the Joker costume worn by the Batman’s infamous arch-enemy. Only in my house!!

Ingredients-

!/2 Head of purple cabbage-shredded

1 Bunch Collard Greens-Julienned

2 Large Carrots-Shredded

Handful of SugarSnap Peas-Julienned

1 Red Pepper-Chopped

1-Green Squash-Chopped

2-3-Green Onions-Diced

2 Ears Fresh sweet raw Corn cut off the cob (It’s my secret favorite ingredient)

Handful of dried Cranberries or Raisins

Handful of chopped raw Pecans or Walnuts

Dressing-

4 Tbs-Olive Oil

2 Tbs-Sesame Oil

2 Tbs Apple Cider Vinegar

2 Tsp Braggs Liquid Aminos or Low Sodium Soy Sauce

2 Tbs-Tahini or Peanut Butter

2 Tsp Agave or Honey

1/2-3/4 Tsp Grated Giner

Salt and Pepper to taste

Put all dressing ingredients in tightly sealed container and shake hard, or just make in blender. Add to salad and work through.

I’m really good at facilitating other people’s creative design ideas, my clients, my students, and now even my soon to be 5 year old son, who art directs me in Photoshop for his movie poster and toy box designs, but I used to do my own art as well. I was even prolific. I painted and drew every day. I needed it the way many artists do, especially when I was unhappy, it was my therapy. But, there’s the rub, I have a great life, damn it, and I find it incredibly hard to recapture the starving, miserable artist I once was. How can I be an artist when I am not that cliche anymore? When we bought our apartment over a year ago, I got very inspired by interior design. I created concept boards for evey room, I devoured every interior design blog, shelter magazine, catalogue, and even watched lots of (insert guilty pleasure here) HGTV. I now have a home full of unfinished, but fully conceptualized rooms. I’ll finish them all by the time I’m collecting social security, if it’s still there. So here we are. I’m teaching my first class at Parsons this week, and my students will be required to have a digital reflective journal and blog. This inspires me, so I’m going to join the exploratory party and see what the hell happens. If I’m lucky, I’ll figure out who I am as an artist and designer once again sans misery, and if I’m still lucky, this will “just” be a good time. So, let ‘er rip…

oh kupka...I wish I knew ya

When I started painting years ago, I began to see things in blocks of color, which is why I love the Fauves so much.

My mouth watered when I first saw Kupka’s Planes By Color at the Guggenheim. I created a piece inspired by the painting in 1982, and it’s still one of my favorites.

I spent hours, before I had my son, and I had time for sitting and looking, staring at Andre Derain’s Bathers at MOMA.

This led me to an obsession with Joan Mitchell, Frankenthaler, Sonya Delaunay, Kandinsky and Mondrian in the mid 90’s.

A linseed oil stained postcard of Gabriel Munter’s Autumn that I bought when I was a student at SVA, is still taped to the inside of my paintbox…
